Senator Reed attended the 2016 Ocean State Oyster Festival, where he sampled local oysters and spoke with local oyster farmers about current conditions in Rhode Island’s growing aquaculture industry. Reed has worked over the years to secure federal funding to help the state’s oyster farmers grow their businesses, and in 2014 he helped deliver $182,000 in funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for the University of Rhode Island (URI) to study the effects of food-borne disease outbreaks on Rhode Island’s oysters.
