Reed Helps Cut Ribbon for New Edesia Factory In Quonset

Senator Reed joined Governor Raimondo, Senator Whitehouse, and others at the ribbon cutting event for Edesia’s new factory in Quonset Business Park.   Edesia is a Rhode Island-based not-for-profit organization that manufactures specialized ready-to-use foods for malnourished children all over the world.  The new 82,000-square-foot facility at Quonset Business Park will more than quadruple the size of Edesia’s 20,000-square-foot building in Providence.

Reed Takes Part in Speaking Program at 2016 State Arbor Day Ceremony

Senator Reed celebrated Arbor Day and efforts to protect and enhance the state’s tree canopy at a ceremony with Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM), the RI Tree Council, National Grid, and the Newport Tree Society.  Following a tree planting, several Rhode Island communities received awards as part of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City and Tree Campus USA programs.  Urban forestry grants for 10 local communities were also announced.  

Reed Delivers Remarks at the Armenian Martyrs' Committee 101st Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide

Senator Reed spoke at the Armenian Martyrs' Committee Commemoration of the 101st Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2016.  Also in attendence were Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Representatives James Langevin and David Cicilline, Governor Gina Raimondo, and Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza. The commemoration was held at North Burial Ground in Providence. 

Reed Gives Remarks at the Autism Project’s Annual Imagine Walk and Fun Day

Senator Reed delivered remarks at the Autism Project’s 14th Annual Imagine Walk and Family Fun Day at Goddard Park in Warwick.  The Imagine Walk was followed by a Family Fun Day event that featured an assortment of free activities designed for children and teens with autism and their families, including: a reptile show, obstacle course, bounce house, face painting, arts and crafts, and more.  A member of the Appropriations Committee, Senator Reed has been a staunch advocate for investing in autism-related research and helped pass the Combating Autism Reauthorization Act.

Reed Helps JROTC Cadets Celebrate 100th Anniversary & Attempt to Break World Record at 5K Fun Run

Senator Reed served as the official starter for a 5K/3K Fun Run as members of Hope High School’s Blue Wave JROTC Battalion joined with hundreds of other ROTC and JROTC organizations nationwide in an attempt to break a world record and make the event the largest run in military history.  The run/walk went through Providence, crossing Hope Street, going down Morris to Sessions, then to Elmgrove and back.  The event included a 100th Anniversary commemoration ceremony.  The community was invited to support this initiative and walk, jog, or run in the race.

Reed, Top NSF Official Meet with Leading RI Researchers

U.S. Senator Jack Reed and Dr. France A. Córdova, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) met with top researchers, mathematicians, scientists, and engineers from Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), and the University of Rhode Island (URI).  

One key stop along the tour was Brown University’s Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM), which was awarded $17.5 million in NSF funding to continue and expand its mission to explore the intersection of mathematics and computation, bringing new techniques and approaches to bear on critical societal challenges from climate change to cybersecurity.

“Strengthening Rhode Island’s research capacity and infrastructure is critical to economic development, spurring innovation plus entrepreneurship, and it’s critical to bringing new, high-tech, science-related jobs to the state,” noted Reed, who has worked to ensure Rhode Island’s EPSCoR eligibility since 2004, and now Rhode Island’s percentage of NSF funding is one of the highest of EPSCoR-eligible states.  The state currently has over $13 million in active EPSCoR awards.
