NEW DELHI, INDIA – Today, after U.S. President Joe Biden traveled to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy and reaffirm America’s commitment to Ukraine, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement:

“President Biden made a bold and historic decision to travel to Ukraine. Despite considerable risks to his physical safety, the President sent an unambiguous message to the Ukrainian people, Vladimir Putin, and the world: the United States will stand with Ukraine as long as it takes to secure its sovereignty and democracy.

“Under vicious assault from Russia for nearly a year, the Ukrainian military has repelled Putin’s forces on many fronts with bravery and skill.  The Ukrainian people have endured unspeakable hardship, yet continue to stand together in resistance.

“Much of Ukraine’s battlefield success has been multiplied by American and international military assistance.  From U.S.-supplied missiles, armored vehicles, and ammunition to European-supplied artillery and fighting vehicles, the Ukrainians are employing international arms to impressive effect.

“During his visit with President Zelenskyy, President Biden announced another delivery of critical equipment, including long-range artillery, anti-armor systems, and air surveillance radars to help protect the Ukrainian people.

“It is important to remember that this conflict matters not just to Ukrainian sovereignty and security, but also to that of our Allies in Europe and indeed our own security here at home. If Vladimir Putin succeeds in this despicable attempt to seize Ukraine, we know he will not stop there.

“Ukraine is fighting for the values that we cherish; freedom, democracy, civil society, and peace. The U.S. Congress, President Biden, and American people will continue to support Ukraine in this fight.”
