Reed Statement on Shooting of National Guard Soldiers in Washington, DC
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, after two National Guard soldiers were shot in Washington, DC, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:
“I am profoundly saddened and disturbed by the shooting of two National Guard soldiers in our nation’s capital today. Every member of the National Guard serves with a commitment to protect their country and support their community. It is unconscionable that these two soldiers were attacked while carrying out that mission.
“My thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with their families, loved ones, and the entire Guard community, and I hope for the soldiers’ swift and full recovery. This was a reprehensible act of violence, and I expect law enforcement to pursue accountability to the fullest extent of the law.
“There is no place for violence like this in our country. In this difficult moment, I urge calm, compassion, and unity.”
