Woonsocket and Central Coventry Fire Departments to Receive Nearly $170,000 in Federal Aid
WASHINGTON, DC — In an effort to help strengthen Rhode Island's emergency response capabilities, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) today announced that the Woonsocket Fire Department and the Central Coventry Fire District will receive over $168,000 in federal funding to purchase new gear and equipment.
"I am pleased to have helped secure this federal funding so that the Woonsocket Fire Department and the Central Coventry Fire District can purchase new state-of-the-art equipment vital to protecting our firefighters in the field," said Reed, a member of the Appropriations Committee. "We rely on our firefighters every day and they do outstanding work. This federal investment will ensure they have the equipment they need to do their jobs safely and effectively."
The Woonsocket Fire Department is being awarded over $114,000 in federal funds to purchase turnout gear for 60 firefighters. This new gear includes protective bunker pants, clothing, gloves, boots, and helmets and will replace equipment that is over ten years old.
"I am extremely grateful to Senator's Reed for his efforts on behalf of Woonsocket's firefighters. This federal funding will replace gear that has been ripped, torn, and can no longer be mended. This award comes at a crucial time in the city's financial picture since the financial downturn has eliminated any capital purchasing," said Chief Kenneth Finlay.
The Central Coventry Fire District will receive over $54,000 in federal funds to purchase up to 12 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBAs) and 39 masks to replace equipment from the 1980s. SCBAs are air packs that provide firefighters with breathable air so they can operate in toxic environments. All 39 firefighters will be individually fitted for a personal mask, and with 9 firefighters per shift, each fire fighter will also have a new SCBA when responding to alarms.
"I am thankful for the help that Senator Reed has given us for funding, particularly given these difficult financial times. This new equipment means that our firefighters will be more effective at performing their duties in hazardous situations. This critical investment will allow us to do our jobs," said Chief Robert Seltzer.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program awards one-year grants directly to local fire departments and emergency responders, enhancing their ability to respond to emergencies. This program supports local departments by providing them with the tools and resources necessary to protect the health and safety of the public and firefighting personnel.
Each February, Reed hosts his annual workshop to assist Rhode Island fire departments that are interested in applying for the grants. Since the inception of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, Reed's workshops have helped Rhode Island fire departments secure 135 awards totaling over $13 million throughout the state.
