WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement after Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) today announced he would not seek re-election:

“Tim Johnson is a great friend, colleague, and Chairman.  He has dedicated his life to serving South Dakota and the nation.

“Tim is widely respected and well-liked on both sides of the aisle because of his wisdom, integrity, and work ethic.  He is fair, open-minded, and a true advocate for the needs of South Dakotans.

“He overhauled our deposit insurance laws, allowing the FDIC to keep Americans' bank deposits safe.  And as Chairman of the Banking Committee, he’s been a strong voice for consumer protection, community banks, and rural housing needs.

“We’ve also worked together on the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, where Chairman Johnson has been a tireless advocate for our veterans.

“I look forward to working with Chairman Johnson for the next two years on the critical challenges facing our nation.  I thank Tim and Barbara for their enduring friendship.  I wish them and their children all the best in their future endeavors.”
