PROVIDENCE, RI -- U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) today issued the following statement on the passing of Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy:

"I am deeply saddened by the loss of Ted Kennedy, and my thoughts and prayers are with Vicki, Patrick, and their entire family. Senator Kennedy had an unwavering love, loyalty, and devotion to them and to this country. He was a true patriot and a true friend, and one of the greatest leaders of our time. It was an honor to serve with him.

"Senator Kennedy dedicated his life to public service, as an advocate for peace; a fighter for educational opportunities; and a defender of the rights of working men and women.

"For nearly half a century, he led the Senate in working to uphold the ideals that make our nation great. His compassion and decency made him respected and revered by Democrats and Republicans alike.

"A champion of civil rights and social justice, Senator Kennedy had a powerful voice and put his words into action to improve the lives of millions. It has been his personal quest to guarantee that every family, every child has access to quality, affordable health care, and that is the challenge that he leaves the Senate.

"He had a big heart, a quick wit, and boundless faith in the goodness of the American people. He was, is, and will always be an inspiration."
