Senator Reed is Standing Up for Rhode Island Against President Trump’s Budget Bill
President
Trump and Congressional Republicans are trying to force their partisan budget
reconciliation bill (H.R. 1) through Congress.
Lowering prices and passing tax cuts for everyday Rhode Islanders
struggling to make ends meet is common sense and I support those policies, but
the President’s Big Beautiful Bill does the opposite.
This disastrous bill has
already been passed by the House of Representatives and will destroy safety net
programs that hardworking Rhode Islanders rely on and increase poverty, all so Republicans
can give massive tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy.
16 million Americans, including roughly 44,000 Rhode Islanders, would be kicked off their health insurance.
Almost 22,000 Rhode Islanders and 11 million Americans would partially or entirely lose their food and nutrition assistance away.
The deficit would increase by up to $3 trillion.
Republicans are stealing from the poor so they can give to the rich by trying to make their tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy permanent.
The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that this bill will make the richest Americans $12,000 richer and the poorest Americans $1,600 poorer.
This irresponsible bill is already threatening our nation’s financial health.
Republicans are moving forward with over $1 trillion in health care funding cuts that will throw an estimated 16 million Americans, including roughly 44,000 Rhode Islanders, off their health insurance, putting a massive strain on families, emergency rooms, and our state's budget.
If passed, H.R. 1 would result in the largest funding cut to Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in U.S. History, while purposefully making it difficult and expensive to get health insurance through Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplaces and undercutting Medicare’s ability to negotiate lower drug prices.
Republicans
want to end tax credits created by the Inflation Reduction Act that have
spurred a green manufacturing boom—eliminating jobs, driving up energy
prices, and moving the country backwards in our fight against climate change.
They are also targeting a program that I
have championed, the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program, which helps Rhode
Islanders keep their homes safe, warm, efficient, and resilient all year.
Republicans want to gut the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
This means 22,000 Rhode Islanders and millions
of Americans will lose all of their food assistance, and millions
more will see significant cuts to their benefits, including up to 420,000
children who will have decreased access to the National School Lunch
Program and School Breakfast Program.
Republicans are making it harder
for Rhode Islanders to get a quality education.
They will eliminate subsidized loans for graduate education, terminate most
student loan repayment options, force educational institutions to repay the
government for the loans of their former students, and even slash Pell Grants eligibility.
H.R. 1 will make education more
expensive for everyone and seriously limit educational opportunities
for a generation of students.
H.R.
1 will ban states from regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI),
putting consumers and workers at risk.
Republicans
want to spend $45 billion on building immigration detention centers
without doing anything to fix our immigration system.
The
Republican proposal removes gun silencers from regulation under the
National Firearms Act and removes the tax on purchasing silencers, making
our communities less safe.
To pay for their tax cuts,
Republicans want to sell up to 250 million acres of federal lands
across the U.S.
If
H.R. 1 is passed, thousands of Rhode Island women will lose
access to their doctors and nurses due to the elimination of women’s health
funding for Planned Parenthood.
